We believe that Service Catalog is an important part of any Enterprise DevOps Toolchain. This is why, after years of guiding enterprises and government agencies through their journey to Enterprise Cloud DevOps, we built ASC as a Service Catalog for Azure.

In a nutshell, ASC allows developers to quickly provision enterprise-approved resources in Azure. ASC’s features and key benefits can be broken into two high-level areas:

Self-Service Provisioning

The end-user experience in the AIS Service Catalog allows a user to browse an enterprise-approved product catalog. A “product” can be just about anything supported by Azure!

For example, an enterprise can set up a product that’s just a simple Azure Storage Account of a certain SKU. Or a product can be much more complex – it could consist of multiple Azure resources, including deploying proprietary application code. A “product” can even be a FedRAMP compliant ARM template, like the one we developed recently in conjunction with the AzureGov engineering team.

IT Governance

For any self-provisioning to succeed, it is important that the IT Operations group has full control over the resources that are included in the product catalog. The key here it that the IT Operations group can first approve any resource before making it available in the self-service portal. Additionally, IT Operations can enforce enterprise standards using Azure policies. These policies prevent resources that are not in compliance with the enterprise standards from being provisioned. For example, an enterprise might have policies such as:

  • Enforce that all provisioned resources must have a “costCenter” tag (for chargebacks).
  • Enforce that all provisioned resources have a “department” tag AND that tag must be one of a specific list of values.
  • Enforce that all provisioned resources are in a particular data center.
  • Enforce that only VMs of a certain size are allowed to be provisioned.
  • Enforce an enterprise-specific naming convention on all provisioned resources.

With ASC, developers can quickly provision technologies and create solutions that meet their deadlines, while IT can manage and provision new technologies while enforcing corporate governance. The AIS Service Catalog allows each team’s competing needs to meet in the middle, and quickly implement a cloud strategy.
