The realistic goal of incorporating AI into our work lives is not to replace humans but to assist them in accomplishing more with less effort. We believe that real value for organizations can be derived immediately by augmenting existing systems with AI.
In this blog, I’ll share an example of augmenting an existing system with AI by illustrating a potential improvement to a critical manual process in industry: site inspections. Using Azure OpenAI’s Realtime API, I built a demo that enhances site inspection with real-time transcription, function calling, and guided data entry. With AI, inspections can be faster and more accurate, allowing inspectors to ensure safety without missing details.
How the Realtime Interaction Works
The Facility Inspection Assistant demo uses Azure OpenAI’s Realtime API to enable quick, live interaction. Here’s how it works:
- Starting the Interaction
The inspector begins by speaking voice commands. These commands are processed in real time by an intermediate service. - Authentication
The service checks the user’s session to ensure proper access and security. - Connection to Azure OpenAI
After authentication, the service connects to Azure OpenAI’s Realtime API. The session is set up based on the inspection workflow. - Real-Time Processing
- Speech is transcribed and processed.
- Relevant sections of the inspection form are filled out automatically.
- If something is missing, the system asks the user to provide it.
- Dynamic Feedback
The AI provides real-time updates. The inspector can check, correct, or add details as needed. - Continuous Streaming
The system streams interactions seamlessly, keeping communication smooth. - Final Report
At the end, the system creates a report with all the data, saving time on documentation.
